San Diego CA - San Diego Police Officers Association today announced the group’s endorsement of the SDSU West initiative that authorizes the sale by the City of San Diego of the former Qualcomm Stadium site to San Diego State University. The Association also opposed the competing SoccerCity initiative that would authorize private development of the site.
“Expansion of the SDSU campus in Mission Valley ensures the university will be able to provide future generations of San Diegans with the higher education opportunities that enrich their lives, strengthen our local economy and contribute to a healthy tax base for our city,” said Jack Schaeffer, SDPOA President. “This is public land, and it should be used for a public purpose that benefits our entire community,” said Schaeffer. “The SDSU West initiative ensures the city will be paid fair market value for this important public asset, guarantees an open and transparent planning process and creates a river park and open space along the San Diego River accessible to all San Diegans,” said Schaeffer.
“In contrast, the SoccerCity initiative would replace our vision for a public safety training facility, on the land formerly occupied by the Chargers training facility, with high-density, traffic generating new development,” concluded Schaeffer.
