CSU Board of Trustees Unanimously Endorses SDSU West

Vote in favor of SDSU West initiative shows strong support for SDSU’s Mission Valley campus expansion opportunity

SAN DIEGO, CA (July 25, 2018) – The California State University (CSU) Board of Trustees voted unanimously to endorse the SDSU West initiative at its bi-monthly meeting yesterday in Long Beach, Calif. The strong, official show of support from the CSU Trustees further affirms SDSU West as the only initiative that creates the opportunity for San Diego State University (SDSU) to expand its campus on the Mission Valley stadium site through a public and transparent planning process.

“A broad range of educators, students, community and business leaders, and SDSU boosters all agree a campus expansion in Mission Valley is the single most important factor for the future success of SDSU,” said Chairman of the CSU Board of Trustees Adam Day. “Today the CSU system officially stands with San Diegans in support of SDSU West as the only initiative that creates an opportunity for SDSU to grow and thrive while bolstering higher education opportunities in the region.”

The CSU System educates 484,000 students every year at 23 universities across the state of California, including SDSU. The 25-member Board of Trustees is comprised of educators, business and community leaders, students and government officials who adopt regulations and policies governing the entire CSU system.

The powerful benefits that higher education brings to the region are undeniable through SDSU West, considering that SDSU currently generates an annual economic impact of over $5.67 billion. Providing a myriad of possibilities to strengthen and extend the university’s reach, the SDSU West initiative would enable the university to expand from its currently landlocked campus and grow its leading athletic, academic and research programs.

“The SDSU West initiative has gained support from leaders in higher education because it acknowledges the monumental impact that education has on economic vitality,” said member of the Friends of SDSU Steering Committee member and Immediate Past President of the SDSU Alumni Association Leo Morales. “Producing more college graduates will fuel the CSU system and benefit the regional economy for generations to come.”

The CSU Trustees’ endorsement comes on the heels of a recent public opinion poll, which found that 62 percent of San Diegans support the SDSU West initiative in an initial vote. The SDSU West initiative has also garnered endorsements from the Aztec Club, SDSU Alumni Association, Aztec Football Legacy, Past President’s Council of SDSU Alumni, Sierra Club and the Lincoln Club of San Diego County, among many other organizations.
